Throughout the country, parkruns take place every Saturday morning at 0900. The parkruns are free timed 5K runs, but you need a barcode to get a result. So if you've not done one before, you should register at www.parkrun.org.uk's registration page, print off a barcode and bring the barcode to the parkrun. A barcode can be used at any of the parkruns. Although runners can take part if they don't have a barcode, they will not receive an official result.

Not at all connected with the parkruns are the Great Run Local 5K/2K runs that take place at Gibside (NE16 6BG) every Sunday morning at 0915 and at Mowbray Park, Sunderland (SR1 1PP) every Sunday morning at 0930. The web site www.greatrunlocal.org says Free event - sign up on the website once, receive your wristband, then just turn up to any Great Run Local weekly event. Come and jog and run the 5K, or walk and jog the 2K. Besides Gibside and Sunderland, there are free Great Run Local events every Sunday morning at a few other places in the UK.
